Walk along the Spaarne River towards Spaarndam to see the Spaarndam pumping station, one of the four large pumping stations from Rhineland used to drain the polder. This station dates to 1845, when steam engines still powered the water wheels. Just around the corner, you’ll find Fort bezuiden Spaarndam, a restored fort that was part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam. While you’re here, grab a drink and bite to eat on the Fort-Zuid terrace.
